“Descarga”, in Spanish, can mean “download”: a key step when we need new content. But it also means “discharge” or “release”, a vital function that usually fills us with joy when our bodies get lost on the dancefloor. We can go on and on to figure out the meanings of words, but the truth is that the most exciting things are the hardest to explain. Nothing seems to be enough to account for the magic involved. That’s why it’s so difficult to recap and describe what we experienced in La Casa de la Descarga, a party devoted to celebrating legacy sounds and Latin electronic fusions.
La Casa de la Descarga took place in the ultimate salsa mecca in Miami, Magnus’ Speakeasy, during Billboard’s Latin Music Week. We had the immense pleasure of partnering up with our friends at Magnus Media and Casa Lumbre to bring this incredible party, made by artists for true music lovers.
One of our main missions was to bring legacy sounds to the dance floor, and in this case, we had the very special Miami debut of Hong Kong’s vinyl DJ, Gia Fu spinning her curated set of Salsa classics. Gifted with an insatiable cultural curiosity, Gia is recognized for being the first Asian woman to produce a salsa record – not just any record, but one of the hottest salsa releases of the last few years.
We had also an electric fusion DJ set by our friend and multi-instrumentalist producer Sinego. A native of Bogota living in Mexico City, Sinego recently stopped by Tigre Studios to make us all dance with “La Under Mesa”, a very own set that mixes old boleros and deep house, in his desire to revalidate Latin American culture in the dancefloor.
And of course, this Salsa Descarga wouldn’t be what it is without the performances from some of Miami’s best musicians: Motiff, Angel “Pututi” Arce, Beatriz “Bea” Cesar, Karmen Muradas, Miriamne Martines Ramos and Jimmy Rodriguez, among others, who left the stage on fire.
As if that wasn’t enough, we were honored to partner with the International Salsa Museum for a historic and beautiful photography museum pop-up, featuring iconic photos from their archives, including Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, and Marc Anthony, to name a few legends. We feel so grateful to co-produce a party rooted in nostalgia, intimacy, and creative expression.
