St. Vincent Releases an Album Singing in Spanish

Some artists are empowered by moving among the unexpected. Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent, is one of those artists. She ignores formulas, breaks patterns, crosses borders, and explores the unexplored. She can rescue guitar amps from the past or visit clubs from the future. Her music always involves a challenge. She even tends to change characters for each album, like Bowie’s good chameleonic heiress. For the still-fresh All Born Screaming, however, she’s decided it’s time to look inward and be herself. The surprise is that she has also decided to translate the entire record and rename it Todos Nacen Gritando. This new version in Spanish will be released on November 15.

“¿Qué estás mirando? ¿Quién crees que soy? Has visto a un hombre roto,” she sings in Spanish, like an electric mantra, in the first single “Hombre Roto”, a new version of the current live show highlight “Broken Man”, out this Thursday night. The release date of Todos Nacen Gritando is scheduled to coincide with St. Vincent’s performance in Mexico City for the Corona Capital Festival. The album will also be performed at the Estéreo Picnic in Bogotá, early next year. Precisely these experiences of touring through Latin America and Spain motivated Annie to adapt her acclaimed album into Spanish.

“The origins of Todos Nacen Gritando can be traced back to some of the most memorable shows I’ve ever played, in Mexico, South America, and recently Primavera Barcelona in 2023,” she explains. “Though separated by time and geography, and across a diverse range of settings and venues, these crowds were united in their passion — singing every word to every song in perfect English. It was truly inspiring. Eventually, I asked myself: If they can sing along in a second or third language, why can’t I meet them halfway? So I enlisted my best friend and occasional collaborator Alan Del Rio Ortiz to work on translating these lyrics, tweaking here and there for melodic reasons, making every effort to stay true to the song at hand without sacrificing accuracy. After much rewriting and re-singing every vocal track on the album, the result is Todos Nacen Gritando, equal parts labor of love and tribute to the people who inspired it.”

In a world where everything seems to fragment, St. Vincent releases an album that reminds us of something as basic as it is existential: we are all born screaming. A scream can be terrifying, but it can also be an immeasurable joy: that of being alive. Annie Clark delves into an inner journey and unravels some human complexities. All Born Screaming is emotionally intense and wonderful. Avant-garde rock and pop continue to flow from her songs. Produced by herself and mixed by Cian Riordan, the album was recorded with the stellar roster of Rachel Eckroth, Josh Freese, Dave Grohl, Mark Guiliana, Cate Le Bon, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Stella Mogzawa and David Ralicke.
