Visual Artist We’re Obsessed With: Joao Incerti

This month, we’re obsessed with Joao Incerti’s work. Joao is a Brazilian visual artist, with a unique talent for creating colourful prints that find commonality between cordel literature, Matisse’s use of colours, and your favorite tropical-printed quilt your grandmother handmade with recycled textiles. His style transmits a feel-good vibe we can’t get enough of, so much so that his pieces leave us feeling as though we’re digging our toes into the sand without actually being near the beach.

Joao found himself frustrated that men’s clothing wasn’t fun enough, and began his path into fashion almost by chance. He started by remixing his everyday clothing, using patchwork. Then, he would hand-paint his own vibrant designs on top of them. After obsessing with these techniques and getting really good at them, he received a pivotal, career-altering gig doing prints for none other than the incredible FARM Rio fashion brand. To date, his printed pieces have become part of many celebrity’s wardrobe, including Sex & The City’s Sarah Jessica Parker, and Gwen Stefani.

His influence as an artist, however, goes beyond Hollywood’s biggest fashion icons. As we took a look through his beautifully curated Instagram, we found Diplo and Major Lazer using his designs as well, even using his very own Instagram filter to promote their music online. As if all of this name dropping wasn’t enough, he also did a print for Adidas.

The key to Joao’s charm is his simplicity and freshness. His clean designs are timeless, original, and inspired by elements of nature, animals, and a desire to celebrate the vibrancies of life. If you like exotic vibes, tropical themes, and forward-thinking fashion with a classic vintage feel, then Joao Incerti will prove to be an endless fountain of inspiration.
