Song of the Week: “Hoy Me Tienes” – El Individuo

While there are so many reasons to be excited for the arrival of Summer – long days of sunshine, delicious sunsets, and an overall feeling of carelessness – there is one element in particular that brings us the most joy when summer rolls around – the arrival of the perfect summer jam. Every summer is marked by a handful of songs that capture the essence of this season, and as this summer gets off to a start, we’ve got the perfect jam to get you going! Enter: El Individuo.

El Individuo, one of the most profoundly eloquent lyricists on the Cuban hip hop scene, brings us his newest single, ‘Hoy Me Tienes’, a catchy and melodic dancehall-inspired track that is meant to be blasted on full volume with the windows down. This song comes to us as a summer treat while El Individuo gets ready to release a 5-track EP due out later this Fall.

“Hoy Me Tienes”  features the musical production of up-and-coming Cuban producer, JD Asere who created the track as an homage to late Cuban bolero singer Roberto Faz, a prominent voice in the 50’s and 60s. The chorus is sung by Dariel Cabrera, another new artist to keep an eye on as he is currently working on his debut EP under the musical direction of El Individuo. All three artists are working out of the Havana-based creative studio, El Espacio, spearheaded by El Individuo and his creative team.

While El Individuo always prefers to let his listeners interpret the meaning of his songs as they see fit, this track is clearly a song about love. The music video, directed by Alberto Rambaudi (the guy behind Cimafunk’s #1 hit video “Me Voy”), paints a picture of the kind of love that drives you crazy and makes you a prisoner of your emotions. As you prepare your summer playlists for the beach, this is a track not to be looked over!
